Book Talk with Bill Fulton

Native Auburnian William Fulton has just released a new book entitled Place and Prosperity—How Cities Help Us to Connect and Innovate. Mr. Fulton will be sharing his perspectives on cities on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 7:00 PM at the Willard Memorial Chapel.

Bill grew up in Auburn and went to school for journalism at St. Bonaventure University and continued his education at the American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned a MA in journalism/public affairs. He also holds a MA in urban planning from the University of California, Los Angeles. As a young writing intern, he covered local news for The Citizen and The Buffalo News. After graduation, Bill was hired as a reporter for the Syracuse Post Standard. He experienced first-hand the Auburn downtown demolition that resulted from the Urban Renewal Program and the NYS Arterial Highway Projects of the 1970’s, which began his interest in cities and urban development. Since that time, Bill has become an expert in what makes cities function as dynamic centers. This book is a collection of many of his thoughts on what makes or breaks the functionality and appeal of cities.

Bill Fulton has combined his love of journalism and urban planning and has written extensively and lectured all over the country. Several articles, books and publications reference his hometown of Auburn. His latest includes an introduction essay on the Auburn urban renewal experience.

Bill has influenced the development of city centers through his work as the Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, the Director of Planning, Neighborhood & Economic Development for the City of San Diego, C.A., and as President of Solimar Research Group. He has been an Economic Development contributor for Governing Magazine, among many others. In his spare time, he served as Mayor and City Council member of Ventura, CA.

Mr. Fulton has offered to sign copies of his latest book at the Willard Memorial Chapel book talk. This event will serve as a fundraiser with a portion of the book sales going towards the restoration of the chapel. Please contact the chapel early to reserve your copy of Bill’s latest book and to reserve a seat at this special event.
