Harriet Tubman Day 2025

Harriet Tubman NHP to Co-Host Harriet Tubman Day Ceremony

Fort Hill Cemetery

The public is invited to commemorate Harriet Tubman Day on March 10 at noon in the Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church on Parker Street in Auburn, part of Harriet Tubman National Historical Park. The event marks Tubman’s approximate birthday in 1822 and will be held in the same sanctuary where her funeral took place in 1913.

The New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center will co-host the ceremony and representatives from the City of Auburn will present a proclamation to family descendants of Tubman. The theme of the event is Love, Light, and Liberation.

Harriet Tubman Day recognizes the achievements and legacy of the Underground Railroad’s most famous conductor. Fondly referred to by the Auburn community and congregation as Aunt Harriet, she was also a leader in local civil rights initiatives, including women’s suffrage, support for the aged and infirm, and racial equality.

“It is especially meaningful to hold this event in the very space where Tubman worshipped, advocated for equality and inspired countless others,” said Superintendent Ahna Wilson. “This celebration commemorates her remarkable accomplishments and reinforces the community’s ongoing commitment to preserving her memory and values.”

The church, and the parsonage next door which also serves as a visitor center, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 10. Visitors can reflect on Tubman’s legacy through a variety of activities, all inspired by Tubman’s activism and fight for equality. Visitors can also visit nearby Fort Hill Cemetery to pay respects at Tubman’s gravesite.
