Join the Seward House Museum for the final installment of the 2024 Distinguished Speaker Series. Harvard University Dillon Professor of American History and scholar Robin Bernstein will discuss her latest book, Freeman’s Challenge: The Murder That Shook America’s Original Prison for Profit.
William Henry Seward described himself as a prison reformer, but in fact his relationship with the Auburn State Prison was complicated. As a lawyer, businessman, citizen, and governor, Seward entangled with the prison. Sometimes he fought its abuses, other times he profited, financially or politically, off it. The Seward House owes its existence in part to the prison: it was built for Elijah Miller, a co-founder of the Auburn State Prison, whose wealth increased as a result of his business dealings with it. Robin Bernstein offers a powerful new perspective on the Seward family, and the Seward House itself, as seen through the prison gates.
